A recent Forbes article tracked two senior managers and their encounters with the after-hours janitorial staff. One manager would gripe and made commandingly clear the cleaning crew was unwelcome in proximity to his late night meetings. The other manager held a more relaxed, if not helpful attitude towards the same outside service provider.
Both managers had tremendous professional standing at their positions in the same company. Each was intelligent and fast tracking to a C-suite position. However, despite the career challenges both would encounter along the way, only one held on to his job.
As it turns out, the manager who had developed a deeper sense of empathy also had built a richer reserve of good will. This in the end overrode smarts and drive. It was this manager who better weathered professional storms and kept his job.
